Cloudy Water Means Your Filter Is Failing

A struggling filter lets algae and debris win, and Phoenix summers speed that up. Get it diagnosed before a small fault becomes a full replacement.

  • Pressure gauge climbing or dropping
  • Sand returning to the pool
  • Leaks at the clamp, valve or housing

Common problems

Signs Your Pool Filter Needs Attention

Pool filters come in three types: sand, cartridge and diatomaceous earth (DE).[1] Each fails differently, but the symptoms look familiar from Scottsdale to Buckeye.

Pool filter tank with pressure gauge and valve beside pump

  • Cloudy water even though the pump runs all day
  • Pressure gauge readings that climb or drop abnormally
  • Leaks at the clamp, valve or housing
  • Sand in the pool, which may point to broken laterals
  • Short cycles between cleanings, or torn cartridges and damaged grids
  • A multiport valve that sticks or won't switch positions

Stop at the symptoms. Pressurized filter tanks are no place for guesswork, so have a pro diagnose the cause.

Sound familiar? The water won't clear. You backwashed, added chemicals and ran the pump longer. It helped for a few days. Now the pump works harder, the filter leaks, and the pool is green again.

Waiting costs more over time. A worn part strains the pump, lets debris through and invites algae that take extra visits to clear.

What it costs

What Drives Filter Repair Cost

Costs vary by filter type, whether the fix is a part or a whole unit, filter size, any valve or plumbing work, and labor. Filter work in Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler usually falls into two buckets: a repair or a full replacement.

Price factors

What moves the price

  • Filter type

Cartridge, DE and sand units have different replacement ranges

  • Part or whole unit

A repair is billed by the part and hours; replacement costs the full unit

  • Filter size

Larger filters sit higher in the replacement range

  • Valve or plumbing work

Extra work adds to the bill

  • Labor

Hourly rates and minimums apply to repairs

Repair costs

Phoenix-area pool companies' own websites, checked October 2026, give these figures:

Item What the sites say
Diagnostic or service-call fee Most list $85 to $95 (full spread $75 to $105)
Hourly equipment repair One Phoenix company's site says $80/Hour + Parts (30 Minute Minimum)
Specific parts (clamps, valves, laterals, grids) Depends on the job
Broad pool repair range One company's site says $100 to $20,000 across all swimming pool repairs

Replacement costs

One source puts pool filter replacement in Phoenix at $500 to $2,500, depending on type and size.[2]

What to expect

How a Filter Repair or Replacement Job Works

Most jobs follow three stages. Many can be handled in a single visit, depending on parts availability.

Step by step

The three stages of a filter job

  1. Diagnosis

The pro checks pressure, flow and the filter's parts, then explains what failed.

  2. Repair or swap

Parts or the whole unit are fixed or replaced after a written estimate.

  3. Restart and check

The system is restarted and checked for leaks, pressure and flow.

Diagnosis

The pro checks pressure and flow, then inspects the housing, valve, and media or grids. You should get a plain explanation of what failed and why.

Repair or swap

Depending on the findings, the fix may be new valves, laterals, grids or clamps. It may also mean fresh media, new cartridges or an entire replacement unit. Expect a written estimate before work begins.

A contract over $1,000 must be in writing with the licence number, price and payment terms.

Restart and check

The pro restarts the system, looks for leaks, and confirms pressure and flow. You should leave knowing how to maintain the filter.

Scheduling can get tight in summer, so book early when the gauge starts misbehaving.

If the pump seems to be the real culprit, see pool pump repair and replacement.

Choosing a company

How to Verify an Arizona ROC Licence

Start with the ROC Contractor Search at roc.az.gov. Don't rely on an ad that says "licensed, bonded and insured." That phrase doesn't prove coverage, as covered in our licensed, bonded and insured guide.

  • Confirm the licence is active
  • Check the class covers the job: R-6 or CR-6 for service and repair, or B-5, B-6, KA-5 or KA-6 for broader work
  • Review bond and Recovery Fund status on the record
  • Ask for the licence number in writing on the estimate
  • Get itemized quotes from more than one pro

Unlicensed operators leave you without ROC recourse.

Complaints must be filed within two years of the last work. Plumbing or electrical beyond a contractor's class may need a different licence.
