White waterline scale looks simple, but the wrong fix can cost you plaster. Find out what you're dealing with first.

  • Scale, algae and cracked tile each need a different fix
  • An acid wash strips plaster, so it isn't always step one
  • Check the ROC licence before anyone starts work

What Pool Tile Repair and Calcium Removal Covers

This service covers waterline tile cleaning, repair and replacement, including calcium deposit removal by bead blasting or acid wash. Phoenix-area water is very hard, so scale at the waterline is common in Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler pools alike.

An acid wash is a different job from tile cleaning. It strips a thin layer of plaster, so it isn't always the right first step.

The right fix depends on the cause. The calcium buildup on pool tile article walks through options from gentle to aggressive.

What it costs

What Tile Repair and Acid Washing Cost in Phoenix

Price depends on pool size, severity of scale, method, tile type and quantity, and access. A light waterline cleaning and a full tile replacement are very different jobs.

Price factors

What moves the price

  • Pool size

More waterline and surface area means more labor and materials

  • Severity of scale

Heavy calcium buildup takes longer to remove than a light film

  • Method

Cleaning, acid washing and tile replacement are priced differently

  • Tile type and quantity

Specialty tile and larger repair areas add to the total

  • Access

    Hard-to-reach areas add time

This page gives no dollar ranges for them. The pool acid wash cost in Phoenix article has the side-by-side comparison.

Phoenix-area pool companies' own websites, checked October 2026, show how some firms price diagnosis and repair:

Item What the sites print
Diagnostic or service-call fee Most list $85 to $95
Hourly equipment repair One company lists $80/hour plus parts, 30-minute minimum
General pool repairs One company's site says swimming pool repairs run $100 to $20,000

Those figures are one company's generic guidance, not quotes. Tile and calcium work depends on the job, so ask for a written, itemised quote.

Contracts over $1,000 must be in writing.

Acid Wash, Bead Blasting or Tile Replacement: How the Work Goes

The work runs in seven steps, from inspection to restart.

Step by step

How the work runs

  1. Inspection and diagnosis

The pro identifies scale, algae or damage.

  2. Method choice

Bead blasting, acid wash or replacement is picked to suit the problem.

  3. Prep

The pro drains or lowers water as needed.

  4. Treatment

Scale is removed by the chosen method.

  5. Tile or grout repair

Loose tile is reset and grout is renewed.

  6. Rinse and refill

The pool is rinsed and refilled.

  7. Restart

Equipment and chemistry are brought back to balance.

  1. Inspection and diagnosis. The pro identifies scale, algae or damage.
  2. Method choice. Bead blasting suits tile scale, acid wash suits plaster stains and scale, and replacement suits damaged tile.
  3. Prep. The pro drains or lowers water as needed.
  4. Treatment. Scale is removed by the chosen method.
  5. Tile or grout repair. Loose tile is reset and grout is renewed.
  6. Rinse and refill.
  7. Restart. Equipment and chemistry are brought back to balance.

An acid wash removes a thin plaster layer, so overuse can leave the surface rough or worn. The how-to guide covers process and aftercare.

Ask each contractor for a timeframe in writing. It varies with method and the extent of damage.

A Gilbert or Tempe pool with heavy scale won't match a light job.

Choosing a company

How to Verify an Arizona ROC Licence Before You Hire

Arizona requires an ROC licence for pool repair work. R-6 allows service and minor repairs of residential pools, and CR-6 includes the scopes of both C-6 and R-6.[1][2]

Broader pool work falls under B-5, B-6, KA-5 or KA-6. See which licence fits your job.

Use the ROC Contractor Search and check:

  • The licence is active
  • The class covers your job
  • Bond and Recovery Fund status

The contract should show:

  • The licence number
  • The price and payment terms
  • The ROC complaint notice

Never pay in cash.

"Licensed, bonded and insured" in an ad proves nothing. ROC requires only workers' compensation insurance, not general liability, so ask the right questions before hiring in Glendale, Peoria or anywhere else in the Valley.

Questions Valley pool owners ask

Calcium buildup on pool tile is caused by calcium carbonate scale that forms when water is hard (high calcium hardness) and has a high pH or high total alkalinity. In Phoenix-area pools, the combination of hard municipal water, intense sun and heat driving evaporation, and frequent chemical additions concentrates calcium at the waterline, where it precipitates out and bonds to tile.

The main contributors are:

  • Hard source water — Phoenix-area water often tests 200-400+ ppm calcium hardness, well above the ideal pool range of 200-400 ppm
  • High pH (above 7.8) — makes calcium less soluble and encourages scale to form
  • High total alkalinity (above 120 ppm) — buffers pH upward and increases scaling tendency
  • Evaporation — leaves minerals behind, especially in summer heat
  • Over-use of calcium-raising chemicals — some shock and pH products add calcium or push levels higher

Regular testing and balancing pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness, plus prompt tile cleaning, prevents most buildup.
