Can you replace your own pool light bulb?
A like-for-like lamp swap in a fixture that is already working is often a homeowner task. Anything that touches wiring, a junction box, a transformer or the circuit is not.
Use a simple go/no-go rule: replace only the lamp. Stop the moment you see a corroded fixture, a damaged cord, a tripped breaker or water in the niche. Pentair's manuals tell you to shut off the circuit before servicing and warn that pool-light installations involve high voltage.[4]

Arizona licensing draws the same line. Under the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC), the R-6 Swimming Pool Service and Repair class excludes electrical work beyond the first disconnect. Confirm the class covers the job on the ROC Contractor Search at roc.az.gov. If you want a pro who can diagnose and repair fixtures, start with Pool Repair.
What to check first when a pool light stops working
Work through the causes in order, cheapest first. Check the switch or timer, then the GFCI breaker, then the lamp itself.
If the GFCI trips again after a reset, stop. Do not keep resetting it, and never bypass it or move the light to an ordinary breaker. A repeat trip points to water intrusion or a wiring fault, not a bulb.
Pro tip
Work cheapest first: switch or timer, then the GFCI, then the lamp. If the GFCI trips a second time, leave the circuit off and call a pro.
Look at the fixture before the bulb
Fogging, a cracked lens or water inside the housing means the seal has failed. That usually calls for a new gasket, and sometimes a new fixture, rather than just a new lamp. Any water inside a sealed LED fixture generally means replacing the whole unit.
Check the cord and the deck-side junction too. Desert UV breaks down insulation faster than humid climates do, and brittle or cracked insulation is a stop sign.
Also note whether your system is low-voltage (12-volt, run through a transformer) or 120-volt, since that changes both the risk and the replacement parts.
A failed niche seal can also look like a pool leak. If the water level keeps dropping, see Pool Leak Detection and Repair and our guide to why a pool loses water.
| Symptom | Likely cause | DIY realistic? | Who to call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light dark, breaker fine | Burned-out lamp | Often yes, if the fixture is dry and intact | Pool service pro if the swap fails |
| Light flickers or trips GFCI | Water intrusion or wiring fault | No | Licensed pool electrical pro |
| Water or fogging inside lens | Failed gasket or seal | Only if dry, with a new gasket | Pool repair pro |
| Cracked lens or damaged cord | Heat damage or worn cord | No | Pool repair or electrical pro |
| Colour LED stuck or unresponsive | Controller or fixture fault | Rarely | Pool pro familiar with the brand |
How to replace a pool light bulb step by step
Stop here if you found water in the fixture, a damaged cord or a GFCI that keeps tripping. The steps below assume a dry, intact, working fixture. Identify the exact fixture, lamp type, voltage and gasket first.

Before you touch the fixture
- Turn off the main breaker or circuit breaker and the underwater-light switch. Pentair's manuals call for both, so the wall switch alone is not enough.[1] Confirm the circuit is dead with a tester.
- Remove the retaining screw or ring. In Phoenix, heavy hard-water scale can make this harder, so go slowly rather than forcing it.
- Lift the housing onto the deck using the slack in the cord. Never pull the fixture by the cable. The pool does not need to be drained, but the water level must stay above the niche.
Swapping the bulb and resealing
- Open the housing and swap the lamp, matching the voltage, wattage and base of the old one.
- Discard the old gasket and fit a new one. Pentair's manuals call for a new lens gasket whenever the fixture is disassembled.[1][2]
- Check the lens for cracks, clean scale off the gasket seat and dry the housing.
- Reseat the fixture, then restore power.
The light must be fully submerged before it is switched on. Pentair warns that running an LED fixture out of water for more than 10 seconds can overheat the assembly and break the lens.[3]
Step by step
Lamp swap at a glance
Power off
Turn off the breaker and the underwater-light switch, then confirm with a tester.
Remove fixture
Take out the retaining screw or ring and lift the housing onto the deck by the cord slack.
Swap the lamp
Match the voltage, wattage and base of the old lamp.
Replace the gasket
Fit a new gasket, check the lens and dry the housing.
Reseat and restore
Put the fixture back under water, then restore power.
Choosing between an LED bulb, a kit or a full fixture
This is a compatibility question first and a savings question second. You have three realistic options: a drop-in LED bulb, a replacement kit or globe, or a full LED fixture.
Match voltage, base type and niche before you buy. A mismatch is the most common buying mistake, and a 12-volt LED does not belong in a 120-volt socket.
An LED "bulb" may also be unsuitable for an enclosed pool fixture unless it is specifically designed and listed for that use. Pentair's IntelliBrite manual states the fixture must be used with compatible Pentair housings or niches.[3]
Older Phoenix-area pools make this trickier. Many niches and wiring runs predate current LED kits, so a like-for-like lamp may be hard to find or the whole fixture may need replacing. For what a pro charges to make the switch, see How Much Does Pool Light Replacement Cost?
When to call a licensed pro instead
Call a pro for repeated GFCI trips, water in the fixture, a damaged or short cord, a corroded niche, no power at the junction box, or any swap that needs a new transformer. Manufacturer guidance also prohibits splicing wire underwater or behind the niche.[5]

Before you hire, check the ROC Contractor Search for active status, a class that covers the work (R-6, CR-6 or B-5) and bond status. Our guide to Arizona pool contractor license classes explains how the classes differ.

Tick them off as you go. Nothing is saved or sent.
Jobs over $1,000 require a written contract that shows the licence number. Hiring an unlicensed provider also means giving up ROC recourse.
Permit rules vary by city. Ask the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale building department whether a fixture replacement needs one, and have your contract say who pulls it.
FAQ: pool light replacement questions
Can you replace your own pool light?
Yes, if the job is a lamp and gasket swap in a dry, intact fixture on a working circuit. Replacing the fixture, cord, junction box or transformer is professional work.
My in-ground pool lights aren't working. How can I fix this?
Check the switch or timer, then the GFCI, then the lamp. If the GFCI trips again, or you see water, fogging or a damaged cord, leave the circuit off and call a licensed pro.
What is the best LED pool light?
The best one is the one that fits your system. Match voltage, base type, niche and brand compatibility, including any transformer or controller.
How much does it cost to replace a pool light fixture?
It depends on the fixture, the wiring and whether a transformer is needed. See How Much Does Pool Light Replacement Cost? for what drives the price.
Can I replace a halogen pool bulb with an LED bulb?
Only if the LED is designed and listed for your fixture, voltage and niche. If it is not, a purpose-built LED fixture, and possibly a transformer, is the safer route.
Do I need to drain the pool to change a pool light?
No, in the usual case. The housing lifts onto the deck on its cord slack while the water stays above the niche.
